Home Care Aide to Nursing Assistant “Bridge” Program
Healthcare Training Center has met the State of Washington requirements for approval of Nursing Assistant Alternative Bridge Training Program and is currently accepting applications for classes.

The alternative “bridge” nursing assistant training program is a way for home care aides (HCA) to become nursing assistants-certified (NAC). The Nursing Assistant Bridge training program is a State of Washington – Department of Health approved program (WAC 246-841-531); it is a 24 hour course: 4 hours of classroom training, 16 hours of lab and 4 hours of clinical. After passing the alternative program the home care aide is eligible to take the State Competency Test to become Nursing Assistant Certified.

The HCA Bridge program will be held quarterly. Please call office for dates at 509-850-0033 for questions. Pre-registration is required.

Students must be able to show proof of completing a Home Care Aide (HCA) program, TB testing, current CPR Certification and pass a criminal background.

Tuition: $400. A deposit of $150 and completed enrollment packet (includes background) will secure a seat in the class.

This 4 day course will include 24 hours of lecture and clinical instruction and provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to enter the health care profession as an entry-level nursing assistant.

Home Care Aide Bridge Program Overview



  • Demonstrate knowledge and support of scope of practice, legal and ethical responsibilities, the uniform disciplinary act, the worker’s right to know and the client’s compliant procedure
  • Demonstrate behavior which respects the resident’s rights and promotion of the resident’s independence regardless of race, culture, religion, lifestyle, disease entity, sexual preference or the ability to pay for services rendered.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of communication techniques and interpersonal skills in performing resident care and the functioning as a care team member.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill of the procedure and techniques in support of infection control, blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, and the prevention and spread of microorganisms.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skill in the timely identification and implementation of procedures for safety and emergency, to include immediate relief measures for choking and measures supporting environmental safety and comfort.
  • Demonstrate personal care skills which facilitate an optimal level of functioning for the resident, recognize abnormal changes in body function, recognize individual cultural and religious diversity and provide nursing care for the resident when death is imminent.
  • Demonstrate competency in the performance of basic technical skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill of the mental health and social service needs of resident’s identify the psychosocial characteristics of the mentally impaired and demonstrate skill in caring for the cognitively impaired resident.

This course uses a combination of lecture with discussion and feedback, textbooks, workbooks, supplemental hand-outs, group and peer discussion, instructor led laboratory/clinical exercises, multi-media materials, PowerPoint presentations and guest speakers. Although every attempt will be made by the instructor to cover assigned material in class, the student is responsible for all materials listed in the syllabus.


  1.  The required course completion consists of 24 hours of classroom lab and clinical instruction.
  2. Demonstration of your comprehension of the classroom instruction by passing course quizzes and exams with a minimum of 75% average of the questions answered correctly.
  3. Demonstration of appropriate professional behavior of caregiver/resident and staff/co-worker interaction in class and clinical settings.

Class Hours

  • Course will be completed over 4 days during the week (6 hours per day)
  • Monday through Friday – Classroom, Lab & Clinical (9am to 4pm)



Total cost of the BRG program is $400 which is divided between tuition, registration fees and books & course materials. The break down of the course costs is as shown below:

Certification Test Fee $110 (PEARSON VUE)

NAC Application $65 (paid to the Washington State Department of Health)



On successful completion of the program a Certification of Completion will be given to the student along with a copy of his/her transcript. Directives will also be provided on the process for applying for the standards of practice and competencies of Nursing Assistants and is consistent with curriculum requirements WAC 483.152(b) and of WAC 246-841-400 through WAC 246-841-610. The competencies per RCW 18.52B.030 are also met. The student will be eligible for state testing on classroom and clinical skills following the successful completion of the Nursing Assistant Program provided through Health Care Training Center.
